NIOSH ERC Traineeships

The Environmental and Industrial Hygiene program is one of the multi-disciplinary programs integrated into the University of Cincinnati Education and Research Center (ERC), sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Our goal is to train the next generation of industrial hygiene practitioners and researchers. Traineeship positions are available to US citizens and permanent residents. Trainees receive stipends, tuition waivers, and benefits, provided they satisfy academic requirements and actively participate in ERC-wide and program-specific activities. Stipends are based on the degree program (MS: $15k–$20k per year; PhD: $35k–$40k per year).

Networking Events

The student chapters and local sections of national professional associations (AIHA, A&WMA, ASSP, AAAR, etc.), the College of Medicine, and ERC inter-disciplinary programs provide numerous networking opportunities throughout the year. Please reach out to student leaders for more information.

Student Memberships

Many national professional associations offer student membership at a low or no cost, in return you get valuable academic resources, scholarships, and career support. Students are encouraged to check out those opportunities. Examples include the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Conference for Governmental Industrial Hygienists, etc.

Early Career Credentialing

Graduates of our ABET-accredited IH-MS program receive a one-year reduction of the required 48-month work experience requirement when applying for the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential through the Board for Global EHS Credentialing.

All of our academic programs are recognized by the BCSP as Qualified Academic Programs (QAPs). Graduates can apply for the Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) designation within one year of graduation. The GSP satisfies the "Qualified Credential" requirement for the Certified Safety Professional (CSP), allowing holders to apply directly for the CSP once they meet the professional experience requirements.

While pursuing degrees in our program, students can apply for the IHMM’s Student Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (ST/CHMM) credentials which recognizes students demonstrating foundational knowledge and skills in hazardous materials management, and Student Associate Safety & Health Manager (ST/ASHM) credential which recognizes students who wish to demonstrate their development of knowledge and skills in safety and health management.
