Research/Clinical Interests

Aspergillus fumigatus is an environmental fungus that causes life-threatening pulmonary infections that have a very high rate of mortality. The organism is a potent opportunistic pathogen that takes advantage of a weakened immune system to establish an infection. For this reason, patients receiving immunosuppressive therapies for the treatment of cancer or organ transplantation are most at risk for developing this disease. As a microbiology laboratory, our mission is to understand how A. fumigatus survives the stress of the host environment so that novel therapeutic strategies can be developed to interrupt these pathways and improve patient outcome.
