Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship

The one-year ACGME-accredited Fellowship in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, based at Hoxworth Blood Center/University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center, is designed to offer physicians career development training that will enable them to assume leadership positions as Directors or Medical Directors of regional or community blood centers or hospital transfusion services. Each year Hoxworth provides approximately 300,000 blood components to 31 area hospitals.

This setting provides a unique environment for clinical training including:

  • Donor selection
  • Therapeutic and component apheresis
  • Transfusion practices
  • Neonatal and pediatric transfusion practices
  • Transfusion support for oncology patients
  • Transfusion reaction investigations
  • Hemolytic disease of the newborn
  • Autoimmune hemolytic anemias
  • Cellular therapies
  • Solid organ transplantation
  • Blood component therapy
  • Trauma and emergency medicine
  • Coagulation and hemorrhagic disorders
