Acute Care Pathway

Skills other than medical knowledge, such as interdisciplinary communication, triaging, and patient safety training, are often taught in informal ways during residencies.

Our Acute Care Pathway makes this part of your formal learning process.

UC utilizes many evidence-based learning environments, including case-based noon reports, Academic Half Days, and senior prep, to hone your medical knowledge content. The Acute Care Pathway uses these same learning principles to provide education of patient care skills outside of general medical knowledge.

The Acute Care Pathway was developed by faculty and residents interested in medical education in the inpatient setting. Based on the Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine, this Pathway addresses the needs of the residents and faculty at UC based on their feedback.

The format was inspired by the Medical Education Pathway, as we meet monthly.

The Acute Care Pathway provides you with:
  • A community of practice with those interested in acute care
  • Support and mentorship for those interested in hospital medicine or acute care via fellowships
  • Partnerships with other residents & attendings
  • Opportunities to join or create inpatient quality improvement work, patient safety research, and patient experience projects
Potential long term goals for the pathway include:
  • Strengthening of the Longitudinal Inpatient Curriculum
  • Creation of additional hospitalist electives
  • A formal pathway certificate at graduation
  • Longitudinal project throughout residency within the domains of quality improvement, patient safety, and patient experience
  • Ward time at Ridgeway Hospital (a building adjacent to the main hospital currently staffed only by hospitalists)
  • Partnerships with Medical Directors (learn how to direct a medical unit)
  • Quality improvement education and mini projects with mentorship
