SURF Experience BannerThe Experience

As a summer student researcher, you will meet students from around the country who have come to Cincinnati to explore a career in biomedical research!

Exciting and diverse opportunities in basic science await you – hands on experience in one of our cutting edge laboratories based at the University of Cincinnati and at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, working under the supervision of our world renowned biomedical research faculty, and taking full advantage of the opportunities available to you in a professional research environment.

As a coordinated group, the SURF programs in the College of Medicine arrange many academic, social and cultural activities throughout the summer, so no matter which SURF program you enter, you will have many opportunities to meet and get to know students across programs.

You will be invited to participate in many academic activities, including Scientific Writing seminars, a Professional Development Workshop, an Ethics in Research seminar.

You will also be able to participate in research seminars and laboratory meetings. At the end of the summer, the College of Medicine hosts a Capstone Poster Symposium for summer researchers. There is an awards ceremony were the winners are celebrated along with their earned prizes. The top presenter(s) can receive the prestigious Olivia Erhardt Memorial Award.

To help you meet and get to know other summer student researchers, you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of organized cultural and social activities throughout the summer. Cincinnati offers a variety of other social events to enjoy during your summer: visit the award winning Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens or King’s Island; see a concert at Riverbend Music Center, or a play at the Aronoff Theatre or the Playhouse in the Park.

Campus Life

Living on campus at UC this summer, you will get to enjoy MainStreet, which includes our Campus Rec Center (CRC), Steger Student Life Center, and Tangeman University Center (TUC), all just a 5 minute shuttle ride from the Academic Health Center (East Campus). Alternatively, out of town students elect to stay in the dorms at the University of Cincinnati. Check out MainStreet for more information.

Summer Semester memberships to the Campus Rec Center are available to all non-UC college students for about $90 if you show your own college ID. Take a virtual tour of the Campus Rec Center.

Parking

On-campus parking is available to our summer researchers at student prices. Please go to: www.uc.edu/about/parking for more information.
