Program Highlights

The Geriatric Psychiatry Fellow rotates on the inpatient and outpatient mental health services at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) and the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Additional experiences are provided at the Cincinnati VAMC Long Term Care Facility. Finally, the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellow is involved in a variety of specialty clinic settings, ensuring an adequate exposure to the diverse clinical problems of the elderly.

The rotations include:

  • Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Unit at University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) and the Cincinnati VAMC
  • Cincinnati VA Outpatient Mental Health Clinic
  • UCMC Geriatric Mood Disorder Clinic
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
  • Long Term Care (VAMC & the Alois Alzheimer Center)
  • Geriatric Psychiatry Telepsychiatry
  • Home-Based Primary Care
  • Geriatric Medicine / Cognitive Disorder Clinic
  • Neuropsychological Assessment
  • Hospice & Palliative Care
  • VAMC Sleep Clinic
  • Neurological Assessment
  • Research and Scholarly Activity

The didactics include:

  • Monthly Geriatric Psychiatry Seminar
  • Monthly Geriatric Psychiatry Case Conference
  • Monthly Psychiatry Journal Club
  • Weekly Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience Grand Rounds
  • Textbook of Geriatric Psychiatry readings complement the didactic learning experiences

Scholarly Project

Each Fellow is required to complete a scholarly project by the end of the academic year. Fellows are encouraged to generate a work product that is suitable for publication.Past fellowship projects have also included developing oral and poster presentations for regional/national meetings.

Textbook

The official textbook for the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship is "The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Geriatric Psychiatry, 4th Edition".
