Preconception Counseling and Self-management
We counsel and manage to help women with diabetes wanting to become pregnant to improve diabetes self management skills achieve a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

Diabetes Counseling and Self-management
We provide comprehensive diabetes self-management education for women and their family members to help them manage pre-existing (Type 1 and Type 2) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Patients are monitored through the postpartum period until they can return to their endocrinologist or family doctor for diabetes care.

Nutritional Counseling
We provide medical nutritional therapy available with an experienced registered dietitian at University Hospital who understands the special needs of pregnant women with diabetes. Our dietitian can help patients achieve tight blood sugar control with daily meal planning by teaching carbohydrate counting, how to correctly read food labels, control food portions, and the importance of consistency with timing meals and snacks. Our dietitian can also counsel women about safe and effective exercise for pregnancy.

Maternal/fetal Surveillance
The maternal/fetal medicine surveillance services include genetic counseling, comprehensive ultrasonography to assess fetal growth and development, fetal birth defect detection and fetal echocardiography, and antenatal testing including non-stress tests, amniotic fluid index and biophysical profile testing to assess fetal well-being.

Ongoing Clinical Support
Ongoing clinical support is offered by an advanced practice registered nurse, registered nurse diabetes educator, registered dietitian and physicians experienced with diabetes and pregnancy self-management. Our multidisciplinary healthcare team is available to talk to you when you have questions or concerns about your healthcare.

Insulin Pump Management
Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) via an insulin pump is a popular method for diabetes management during pregnancy and beyond. Insulin pump users committed to diabetes self management can achieve and maintain tight blood sugar control necessary for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

The pump continuously infuses rapid-acting insulin through a small plastic catheter placed in the subcutaneous fat under the skin in the abdomen. The pump is programmed with hourly basal rates and insulin to carbohydrate ratios. The patient programs a bolus dose of insulin before meals and snacks based on the calculated insulin to carbohydrate ratio for the food that will be consumed. CSII is a safe and effective way for pregnant women with diabetes to manage blood sugars. Personal Continuous Glucose Monitoring
A personal continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) measures blood glucose 24 hours a day to give you the benefit of knowing your blood glucose levels around the clock. CGM may help you figure out how your meal plan, exercise and insulin regimen affect your blood glucose levels. If your blood glucose levels are up and down, this technology may be able to help you prevent those highs and lows and protect you and your baby’s health. Professional Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Sensor Recorder
The professional continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensor recorder enables our healthcare team to help our patients improve diabetes self-management. Patients wear the CGM sensor recorder for three days which gives us and you the benefit of using the data to reveal blood glucose trends and help patients improve you with hypoglycemia unawareness, prevent highs and lows, insulin therapy adjustments and protect you and your baby’s health. Our healthcare team is highly skilled at assisting patients achieve tight blood sugar control with the use of the CGM sensor recorder.
