Program Summary

The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, strives to prepare undergraduate students for graduate and doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. McNair participants are either first-generation college students with financial need, or members of a group that is traditionally underrepresented in graduate education and have demonstrated strong academic potential.
McNair research faculty mentors have the opportunity to host a UC McNair Scholar by providing the student a research project and strong mentoring. The lab placement typically begins in early October with the scholar working approximately10 hours per week through April of the following year. The scholars on the McNair traditional track would also be required to work full-time in the lab over the summer. The McNair program covers the stipend for the scholars. The only financial obligation for faculty members are the lab supplies that the scholar needs for their research project.
