Timothy Freeman, MD

Photo of Dr. FreemanFor more than 30 years, Dr. Freeman focused his medical practice on the care of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He was a pioneer in this field, caring for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities long before there was national recognition of the need for improved health care for this population. Dr. Freeman was instrumental in developing the UC Health Transition Care Clinic and the Intellectual and Developmental Disability Program. Additionally, he has taught, mentored, and inspired hundreds of other physicians during his career. His incredible passion in treating people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and improving their health and quality of life was truly remarkable.

A native Cincinnatian, Dr. Freeman received his medical degree from the UC College of Medicine in 1984 and completed his family medicine training at UC in 1987 before joining the College of Medicine faculty. Dr. Freeman also served for a time as the associate director of the UC Family Medicine Residency Program.

In addition to the extraordinary care he provided his patients, Dr. Freeman was a well-known photographer. Several of his photographs hang in conference rooms in the Medical Sciences Building and his work has been featured in numerous art exhibits in Cincinnati and throughout Ohio during the last several decades. Dr. Freeman was a self-taught photographer who specialized in photographing ordinary things in life and capturing and communicating the objects’ dramatic beauty. He also specialized in landscapes, especially from his many trips to the western U.S. and Alaska. He has two collections featuring patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Pieces from these collections will be displayed in the Freeman Center. His beautiful and moving photography is just another way in which Dr. Freeman has enriched the lives of so many people.

Dr. Freeman passed away on February 3rd, 2022 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. The Freeman Center is named in his honor.
