Overview

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology and Systems Physiology (PSP). Our goal is to advance the fields of basic and applied physiology and pharmacology by engaging in innovative biomedical research. We provide our students with a challenging and supportive environment to pursue academic and professional careers in the biomedical sciences.

Physiologists and pharmacologists alike are curious about the ability of molecules to contribute to cell function, the ability of cells to contribute to tissue function, the ability of tissues to affect organismal function, and ultimately the effects that therapeutic agents have on these systems. Physiology is the science that integrates simple mechanisms into complex systems, and pharmacology uses this knowledge to support the development of the next generation of therapeutic agents.

Congratulations to Afra Rahman!

Mar 2024 – Afra, a Medical Sciences senior in Dr. Chella Krishnan's lab, has won three awards that will allow her to present her work at the American Physiology Summit 2024.

PhD student has first-author paper in "JOVE"

Mar 2024 – Congratulations to Sevde Göker (Hong lab) for her paper Monitoring circadian oscillations with a bioluminescence reporter in organoids.

Mar 2024 – Dr. Pixley is Co-Investigator on a newly funded NIH R01 grant Developing multi-cue piezoelectric PVDF-TrFE biomaterials for peripheral nerve repair.

Christina Thapa defends PhD thesis!

Mar 11, 2024 – Christina Thapa, PhD student (Crone Lab), successfully defended her thesis, 'Exploring the heterogeneous responses of V2a neurons following spinal cord injury.' Congratulations Christina!

Dr. Herman received Daniel Drake Medal!

Mar 2024 – James Herman, PhD receives UCCOM's most prestigious honor: the Daniel Drake Medal for outstanding and unique contributions to medical education, scholarship and research.  Congratulations to our Chair!
