The UC Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism fellowship program does not accept paper applications. We do participate in NRMP Subspecialty Match program. Please apply via ERAS and upload the requested information and documents there.

Fellowship FAQ's:

What is the duration of fellowship program?

Our fellowship is typically 2 years in duration. However, an optional 3^rd year of training, can be arranged depending upon the available funding resources on case by case basis. IMSTAR program within the department of Medicine provides an opportunity for selected trainees to pursue specific training in basic, translational, clinical or educational research. How many fellowship positions are available?

Our program has a total of 5 fellows in the program. We offer 2 positions alternating with 3 every other year. Please refer to ERAS and NRMP websites for available positions in a specific academic year. 

What is the typical rotation schedule?

Fellows are on UCMC consult service for an average of 3 months per year. They are assigned to VAMC ambulatory rotation, West Chester Hospital and Research/Diabetes Now rotation for 2-3 months each year in addition to one month of vacation/educational leave.

How are applicants selected for interviews? 

We review the applications through ERAS starting July 15^th till August 31^st. Our key teaching faculty members review the applications and the selected candidates are contacted through ERAS and email to schedule in-person interviews. We review the ERAS application in its entirety but pay special emphasis on the candidates’ letters of recommendations, personal statement and research/scholarly activity. Interviews are held from late August through October.

What is a typical interview day like?

The majority of interviews occur on Thursdays. The interview day usually runs from 11 AM to 4 PM. Candidates will be given an introduction and overview of the program by the Program Director, followed by tour of University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Candidates will have lunch with the current fellows followed by 4-5 personal interviews with our faculty members. The day will end with candidates attending a teaching conference. 

Are there opportunities for fellows to teach?

Yes, our fellows teach medical students, rotating residents and the junior fellows. Our fellows give endocrine grand rounds to our division in addition to regularly presenting journal club and clinical case conferences. The educational presentations by the fellows are formally evaluated and specific feedback is provided to them to further enhance their teaching and presentation skills.

Are there opportunities for fellows to to perform procedures?

There are plenty of opportunities for the fellows to perform procedures
We have Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) clinics at both University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Cincinnati VA Medical Center. Fellows also receive specific instruction and hands-on experience in performing ultrasound of endocrine neck by ECNU certified faculty. Diabetes technology clinic provides fellows with hand-on experience with insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices. Fellows get specifically trained in interpretation of DXA scans. Fellows also participate in therapeutic administration of Radioactive Iodine-131 in treatment of thyroid diseases. 

What EMR is used?

At UC Health, our EMR is Epic. CPRS is used at VAMC.

How is the call covered?

Fellows are on the UCMC consult service for 1 month at a time. The UCMC consult fellow takes after-hours call for 3 nights per week. Fellows take weekend consult call on rotating basis. On average, each fellow covers one out of every five weekends.

What are the research expectations from the fellows and what resources are available for fellows in this regard?

Our fellows participate on various research and scholarly activities under the guidance and supervision of faculty members during their training. Fellows are expected to submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal and present at a national professional society meeting at least once during their fellowship. Fellows are also expected to participate in a clinical or educational quality improvement project. Fellows get an annual CME allowance to support their travel to a national professional society meeting.
