The electrical system of the heart, through a series of complex biochemical and physiological events, permits an intricate and well-coordinated mechanical synchrony of the atria and ventricles, maximizing efficiency and performance. Irregularities of the heart’s rhythm, also known as arrhythmias, are common and can be either inherited or acquired, either in isolation (primary arrhythmias) or associated with other heart-related or systemic illnesses or conditions (secondary arrhythmias). The HLVI Center for Electrophysiology, Heart Rhythm Disorders and Electro-Mechanical Interventions employs state-of-the-art diagnostic, management and treatment tools.
