How do our doctors and researchers improve your job prospects?

The UC College of Medicine is bucking trends by increasing new grants and contracts at a rate much higher than the national average. In 2016 alone, the College’s contracts and research grants totaled more than $115.8 million, which is 30 percent over the prior year. In an era of discriminating investigational capital, this is welcome news to our regional economy.

Why does this matter to Cincinnatians? Because not only is transformational research taking place right here that improves care in your own doctor’s office, but it fuels growth in a financial sector that impacts the entire region.

The UC College of Medicine’s indispensable economic impact in excess of $4.6 billion over five years means we continue to bring in hundreds of millions in “new dollars” from other markets – all of which would be impossible without the hard working, talented doctors and researchers among us.

Consider, for instance, Jonathan Thompson, MD, Johnathan Thompson, MD of college of medicineFACS, FASMBS. Dr. Thompson is an excellent example of the distinguished professionals the College brings to our community. His innovative work has impacted weight-management medicine, and his passion for developing needs-based devices fueled his commitment to seed the Thompson Center at the University of Cincinnati Research Institute. As just one example, in his work against the domestic obesity epidemic, Thompson led the R & D for a medical device that has transformed how weight-loss surgery is performed.

Dr. Thompson’s life-changing work is but one example of how UC College of Medicine investigators and physicians bring money and growth to the Cincinnati region. From job creation to raising seed capital to sourcing to local manufacturers, Dr. Thompson is part of an indispensable force of talent that fuels both Greater Cincinnati’s health and well-being while promoting a strong regional economy.
