Medical Scholarships

The average medical student graduates with more than $168,000 in student debt—an amount that can take decades to pay off and can adversely affect a young graduate's career choices. Currently, the College of Medicine can provide scholarships to just 16 percent of all students—a percentage we wish to increase. 

By designating your gift to College of Medicine scholarships, you help alleviate our students' debt burden and help the College of Medicine attract top medical students.  

The IvaDean Medical Student Scholarship Fund

Generations of medical students at the University of Cincinnati have one special thing in common—a woman who has worked in the Dean’s Office for more than 50 years, making sure “her kids” were taken care of as they studied to become physicians.

The College of Medicine Class of 2003 used its class gift to start the IvaDean Medical Student Scholarship Fund as a tribute to this woman’s profound influence on medical students as an advisor, advocate and confidante. The scholarship honors IvaDean Lair, registrar of the College of Medicine, and her role as “the person who has contributed the most to making medical school manageable,” according to the medical students she assists.

Lucy Oxley, MD, African American Medical Student Scholarship Endowment Fund

This scholarship has been established within the Gaston Scholars program to further grow the underrepresented population of African-American medical students at the College of Medicine. Dr. Oxley is a 1935 alumna of the College of Medicine and first African-American to earn a medical degree from UC. This scholarship honors her pioneering spirit in paving the way for future medical students.

Named Endowment

An endowed gift provides support forever because the original principal remains intact and earns investment income in perpetuity. A new named endowment can be created with a minimum of $50,000 and can be named by the donor for themselves, a loved one or mentor. Contributions to endowment funds are professionally invested by the University of Cincinnati Foundation with assistance from one of the nation's best financial consulting firms.

With a one-time gift or pledge paid over several years, this scholarship money is directed straight to a student with demonstrated need or as directed by donor intent for immediate impact.
