The UC Department of Medical Education is committed to promoting excellence in teaching, supporting scholarship among medical educators, enhancing the curriculum by supporting, recognizing and rewarding outstanding teachers, and by building community among medical educators.

Department Focuses

Medical students in Anatomy Lab

Education: The department is recognized as being the heartbeat of the medical school curriculum. Our overall mission is to integrate basic science and clinical science throughout all four years of medical school, with a changing emphasis of each over time (see figure).

Scholarship: With an interdisciplinary faculty, DME’s scholarship agendas include, among other areas, scholarship of teaching and learning, curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, and translational science.

Service: Department members serve on a variety of educational college committees including the Educational Policy Committee (EPC) and the M1/M2 Curriculum Committee. The DME also hosts and participates in faculty development workshops focusing on curriculum design and teaching.

Medical Student Interest Group Focuses on Health Care in Rural Areas

Two dozen UC medical students are now part of the Rural Health Student Interest Group in the UC College of Medicine. The group started last August and meets about five times a year with activities designed to focus on health issues facing rural areas, offer health-related volunteer opportunities in rural areas and provide medical students shadowing opportunities with health professionals.
