Medical Scientist Training Program

How to Apply

  • Eligible applicants will be United States citizens or permanent residents (with a permanent residency visa).
  • Candidates must apply to the University of Cincinnati MSTP through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and subsequently complete the MSTP Secondary Application**. Applicants will have the opportunity to apply to both the MD/PhD program and the MD program when completing the Secondary Application.

  • For applicants who choose ONLY to apply to the MD/PhD program (not both the MD and MD/PhD programs), there is no secondary application fee.
  • For applicants applying to BOTH the MD/PhD and MD programs, an application fee ($100) is charged. This MD secondary application fee ($100) may be waived** for those who, without financial assistance, would be unable to also apply to the medical school.  If you believe that you meet this criterion you may request a fee waiver.

Each year the program receives approximately 200 applications. 50-60 applicants will be invited to interview for 9 available MD\PhD student positions. Applicants with a GPA greater than 3.5, MCAT score above the 80th percentile, and significant research experience (e.g., honors thesis, postgraduate work) are considered competitive. However, each application is given individual consideration.

There are two special fellowships for which applicants can be considered:

  1. Jeffrey A. Whitsett Physician-Scientist Training FellowshipThis outstanding applicant with a declared interest in pediatrics and pediatric research will perform his/her PhD training in the Molecular & Developmental Biology Graduate Program. Applicants must apply to be considered for this fellowship: Whitsett Fellowship Application
  2. Albert B. Sabin Physician-Scientist Training FellowshipThis unique fellowship is awarded by the Immunology Graduate Program to a MSTP applicant with a demonstrated strong interest and commitment to research in immunology or related areas.
