Shipping ES cell generated knock-out mice from the University of Cincinnati:

1. The mice are housed in a pathogen free, barrier facility in microisolator cages which dispense sterile water and food. Handling of each cage is preceedede by sanitation with the appropriate solution. All cage handling is done in a laminar flow hood. Personnel wear surgical masks, hair net, gloves, shoe covers, and gowns.

2. The latest health report on sentinel mice is sent prior to shipping.

3. Shipping cartons are obtained from Zivic-Miller Lab., Inc., Jackson Laboratories and Taconic Farms. Cartons are stored in the barrier facility. Prior to use, the cartons are sprayed with freshly prepared sterilizing solution. Bedding and food are sterilized. The sterile water source is a packet of Napa Nectar (SE Labs). The original cage card describing the mice is taped to each section of the shipping carton which contains the mice it describes.

4. Mice are shipped by Burlington Air Express and are sent out on Monday or Tuesday for overnight delivery. On the day sent, the investigators receiving the mice is notified by fax of the airbill number. The Service pays for the shipping, billing the investigator later for the cost.

6. Sending ES cells to the Service Core. ES cells should be sent packed on dry ice at the beginning of the week. We do not accept weekend deliveries and cells should not sit for a prolong period before completion of delivery. Federal Express overnight delivery is strongly recommended. Once the Service Core receives the shipment, a fax is sent to the investigator stating the shipment has arrived intact.

7. Any mycoplasm samples sent to the core should be done by Federal Express overnight delivery. Please label all tubes with the appropriate information. Do not freeze any samples prior to shipping or ship packed on dry ice.
