Cardiothoracic Imaging
The Cardiothoracic Section is dedicated to state-of-the-art imaging of the lungs and heart. Imaging modalities include digital computed radiography, direct radiography, computed tomography (CT), CT angiography, high resolution CT of the lungs for interstitial lung disease and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The faculty in the Cardiothoracic Imaging Division include:
Cristopher Meyer, MD, section chief
Jannette Collins, MD, MEd, FCCP
Helen Corcoran, MD
Ralph Shipley, MD
Harold Spitz, MD
Jerome Wiot, MD
Topics of interest pertaining to lung imaging include lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis and occupational lung disease. The physicians in this section are responsible for lung cancer imaging at UC and participate in UC’s Lung Cancer Research Group. They are currently concluding a regional study evaluating the role of lung cancer screening in heavy smokers. These physicians provide the imaging expertise for the UC Center for Interstitial Lung Disease and have provided imaging support for multiple drug trials investigating the treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Sarcoidosis. In addition, three of these physicians (JFW, RTS, CAM) are National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health – certified B-readers providing interpretation of CXR for individuals suspected of occupational lung disease (coal dust, silica or asbestos exposure). Only approximately 300 physicians currently hold this certification.
Cardiac imaging with multidetector helical CT is available in our 3 locations, University Pointe, the Medical Arts Building and the University Hospital. Cardiac CTA is obtained using one of two Siemens Sensation 64 CT scanners and Siemens Definition Dual Source CT scanner. Physcians in this section have published and presented nationally on topics pertaining to cardiac CT and are national experts in atrial fibrillation imaging. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is also performed on GE 1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI for functional evaluation and myocardial viability imaging.
Dr. Jannette Collins, our current Chair of Radiology and a cardiothoracic radiologist is the immediate past President of the Society of Thoracic Radiologists (STR). Dr. Jerome F. Wiot, past chair of Radiology, is an ARRS Gold Medial recipient and past President of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS).
