The residency program in Diagnostic Radiology at University Hospital/University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has a long history of outstanding teaching and patient care. Our focus on resident education has been the foundation of this department since its inception and has continued under such luminary radiologists as Dr. Benjamin Felson, Dr. Jerome Wiot, and Dr. Robert Lukin. This commitment has produced many renowned radiologists, both in the academic and private practice communities. We continue to strive to improve resident education to meet the changing challenges of radiology.

The Department of Radiology is currently under the direction and leadership of Mary Gaskill-Shipley, M.D., Interim Chairman. A new department chair has been selected, Janette Collins, MD, MEd who will begin in early 2009.

The Residency Program Director is Robert Wissman, MD.   Dr. Wissman completed medical school and his residency at the Ohio State University.  Dr. Wissman also completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging at the Mallinckrodt Institute for Radiology.  He was in private practice for 6 years prior to joining UC Radiology.  Please follow this link to Dr. Wissman's page.  Robert Wissman, MD

The residency program is primarily based at University Hospital, a 695 bed teaching hospital with a diverse patient base, ranging from Primary Care to tertiary referrals and organ transplantation. University Hospital is also a Level 1 Trauma Center with an active helicopter service. Many specialties at University Hospital have been cited for their excellence, including the Stroke Program, a collaborative effort between Neurology, Emergency Medicine and Radiology. Other areas of excellence include Emergency Medicine, and programs in cancer and otolaryngology. Approximately 220,000 radiographic examinations are performed here annually. We currently have 4 CT scanners, 4 MR scanners, and 6 ultrasound systems. An operative MR has recently been installed with an adjoining operating suite. This system is the first of its type in North America. Two new angiography suites have recently been installed.   Recently, a 4T research only MRI system was installed and is operated under the joint efforts of the Department of Radiology, the Department of Psychiatry, and the Department of Neurology.  A full variety of exams are performed at the University Hospital allowing a complete experience in all the areas of Diagnostic Radiology.

Rotations

Residents also rotate through Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), one of the premier pediatric facilities in the nation. CCHMC has 335 beds and delivers nearly all of the pediatric care in the Cincinnati area. In addition, due to its reputation, referrals come from throughout the world. Approximately 120,000 radiological examinations are performed annually.

Rotations are also spent at the Veteran's Hospital, a 250 bed facility, which is entirely staffed by radiologists from the University faculty. They perform approximately 35,000 examinations per year, including all imaging modalities except MRI. Residents also rotate at Christ Hospital, which has approximately 500 beds and is one of the most respected private hospitals in this region with outstanding facilities in cardiac care. The variety of patient care settings provides a wealth of experience with an outstanding case mix.

Radiology residents will spend their first year creating a strong foundation in all areas of radiology with rotations in most specialties. It is upon this foundation that future years of education and growth are built. We believe that the program is well balanced with education in all areas of radiology.

We continually assess the educational needs of the residents as the specialty of radiology evolves. The educational structure of the residency is based upon learning through patient cases and didactic teaching both in the formal conference setting and through patient care. Teaching is almost entirely performed by Attending Staff.

Additional teaching materials are available in the Department library, which includes both journals and texts. Teaching files are available in film, videodisc, and CD-ROM format. The Medical Center Library houses additional 200,245 volumes with 5,594 journal titles and is directly connected to the hospital. Electronic search services are available both in the Medical Center Library and in the department. In addition, direct Internet access is available throughout the department.

Additional Opportunities

Additional opportunities, which are made available to the resident, include research and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). There are multiple research opportunities available at both University and Children's Hospitals. An Imaging Research Center, located at Children's, is an extensive research facility including a 3T Brucker research MR system. A $1350 educational allowance is provided to the residents at the beginning of their second year in Radiology. Full reimbursement for educational trips is available to residents when they are the primary author of a presentation at a national meeting.

Location

Located along the banks of the Ohio River, near the junction of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Cincinnati is a vibrant city of about 364,000 people, with 1.8 million living in the greater Cincinnati area. It was recently voted as the number one place to live in the Places Rated Almanac. A combination of a low cost of living with excellent living conditions, an active cultural and theatrical community and professional football and baseball teams have made this city a wonderful choice in which to live.

We hope that this has served as an introduction into our residency program. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions. Our telephone number is 513-584-6016.

One convenient and cost effective housing option is Bellevue Gardens, which is located across the street from The University Hospital. Visit Bellevue Gardens at www.thebellevuegardens.com.

We grant interviews from November through January.  We generally interview only 2-3 candidates per day to give us the opportunity to get to know you as best we can and to allow you to assess our program in a detailed way.  Ample time is allowed to speak with our residents about their experiences in our program.
