Nuclear Medicine Fund

The University of Cincinnati Department of Radiology Nuclear Medicine Fund was established in 1986 through donations to the Nuclear Medicine section. The proceeds from the fund were designated to be used for teaching and research activities in the Nuclear Medicine section.

The Nuclear Medicine program at the University of Cincinnati was one of the first established in the US in the mid 1940s. It began in one small room with a single rectilinear scanner to image the thyroid gland with radioiodine-131. Dr. Mariano Fernandez-Ulloa has served as the Nuclear Medicine section chief since 1998.

Two academic programs are offered by the section:

  • A Nuclear Medicine fellowship program offers one year of training for radiologists who wish to strengthen their Nuclear Medicine image interpretation, radiation protection, and management skills.
  • An Advanced Medical Imaging Technologist program trains students in multimodality techniques, such as MRI and ultrasound in addition to Nuclear Medicine. This training is especially important in this new age of “hybrid” imaging where dual modality scanners (such as Nuclear Medicine and CT, or Nuclear Medicine and MRI) are combined into a single scanner.

The Nuclear Medicine program is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
