Musculoskeletal Radiologyarrow

Introduction

The Musculoskeletal Fellowship Program is a non-accredited subspecialty training program committed to integrating high academic and professional competency standards into a comprehensive training curriculum. The program provides subspecialty education in musculoskeletal radiology to physicians already trained
in diagnostic radiology through an academic core curriculum and provides professional development via the ACGME’s general competencies.  Our goal is to train highly competent and qualified radiology subspecialists in musculoskeletal radiology who will support patient care as effective members of the clinical care team with strong interpretive skills, knowledge of appropriate diagnostic radiology tools and cost effective resource utilization.

Goals and Objectives

The objectives of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship are to:

  • Educate fellows in the advanced interpretation of radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine/
PET and ultrasound examinations of the musculoskeletal system and in
the performance of fluoroscopy, ultrasound and CT guided procedures.
  • Educate fellows in the biology, treatment and complications of neoplastic
and acquired musculoskeletal diseases, particularly as they are reflected
in musculoskeletal imaging studies and procedures.
  • Provide an opportunity for clinical education and academic research using
the resources and clinical material available at University Hospital.
Plain Radiographs and CT
  • Recognize normal anatomy.
  • Recognize majority often commonly seen anomalies, commonly seen developmental anomalies, congenital anomalies, pathologic and traumatic conditions.
  • Recognize practically all musculoskeletal anomalies, including also those rarely seen, being able to give a graded differential for practically all conditions.
MRI
  • Recognize normal anatomy and most common pathologic and congenital anomalies.
  • Recognize and identify correctly the majority of congenital, developmental, inflammatory and acquired anomalies.  Be able to separate them into diagnostic group and recognizing artifacts and separate from anomalies.
Arthrography
  • Understand the principles of arthrography and be able to place a needle in any large peripheral joint.
  • Perform arthrography and place a needle in all necessary joint spaces. Understand the principles and interpretation of arthrography.
Duties and Responsibilities

Each day will begin with morning conference or imaging readout on an individual duty basis.  This typically will be 7:00 or 8:00 am.  The day end typically at 5:00 pm, or earlier as clinical caseload dictates.  A typical daily schedule will consist of reading plain films and CT and MRI studies in the Bone Reading room, scheduling and performing biopsies and other special procedures (arthrograms, joint aspirations), providing consultation to colleagues and referring physicians,
and supervising musculoskeletal MR and biopsies.  The fellow will also oversee
and instruct Radiology residents assigned to the MSK rotation.

The fellow will participate in relevant conferences including weekly bone conference, MR conference, multidisciplinary conferences, daily resident T-meetings and Journal Club.

Fellows will participate with staff in as many procedures as possible in the musculoskeletal section (arthrography, injections, fluoroscopy, CT and MR).
All of these procedures are performed by or under direct supervision of the
staff person covering the section.  Responsibilities are dependent on the
resident's expertise.

The fellow will have one-half day per week for academic pursuits.  A research project is encouraged, but some form of scholarly activity is required.  The fellow will meet with the program director early in the year to identify a project with the goal to submit an abstract for presentation at a national meeting or complete a potentially publishable paper by the end of the year.  Funding support is available to conduct a research project as well as to attend a national conference.

Supervision and Evaluation

Imaging readout, interpretation, dictation, and procedure performance, interpretation and reporting will be supervised by attending staff.  When clinical care responsibilities are unusually difficult, prolonged, or overlap other procedures, or if other unexpected circumstances occur, the fellow should identify and seek help from co-trainees and/or attending staff.  After hours, the on-call staff
member is available to the fellow to provide assistance.  Fellows are assigned a reasonable amount of in-hospital duty hours.  The responsibility or independence given to fellows is dependent on his/her level of knowledge, manual skills and experience; however, in accordance with HCFA recommendations, faculty
coverage is present during all invasive procedures.

Evaluation of the fellow will be performed quarterly by faculty members by
means of a standardized evaluation form.  Fellows will meet quarterly with the Program Director to review a composite of faculty evaluations and to discuss
their progress to date.  At the end of the training program, the fellow will have
the opportunity to evaluate the faculty as well as the overall effectiveness of
the program in achieving its stated goals and objectives.

Selection Criteria

Selection of applicants will be supervised by the Program Director, with the consultation of other faculty members in the division.  Applicants are selected based on a review of submitted documentation, relative academic strength and other criteria determined by the Program Director.  Applicants must have an MD
or DO degree from an accredited institution, completed an ACGME-accredited residency in diagnostic radiology and must be eligible for board certification or certified by the American Board of Radiology.  Applicants must also be eligible
for licensure by the State Medical Board of Ohio.

If you are interested in applying to the body imaging program, please submit
the following materials to the fellowship coordinator:

  1. Completed Universal Application (link application)
  2. Current CV
  3. Personal statement including goals and professional plans
  4. Three letters of recommendation including a letter from the director of your residency program. Letters of recommendation must be less than six months old.
  5. Copies of USMLE transcripts (Steps 1, 2, and 3 are required prior to beginning fellowship)
  6. Photo (optional)

Selected candidates will be invited for a personal interview with the Program Director, other members of the section faculty, and the current fellows. Interviews are conducted on an on-going basis.

International Medical Graduates

IMGs interested in applying to our program must register with the National Match.  The Department of Radiology sponsors J-1 visas only.  Requests for H1-B visas
are at the discretion of the program director and must receive the approval of the departmental chair.  Individuals must have graduated from medical school within the past five years and possess a valid ECFMG certificate which requires passing
all components of the USMLE exam as well as other examinations as required by the ECFMG.  The ECFMG certificate must be valid at the start of fellowship or the fellow forfeits his/her position in the program.  A valid Ohio medical license or training certificate must be obtained prior to start of training.

In addition to the documents listed above, IMG’s must also include in their application:

  1. Verification of ECFMG certification and photocopies of all USMLE exam results
  2. Copy of medical diploma (translation required)
  3. Medical School transcript
  4. Copies of previous GME experience (translation required)
Salary and Benefits

Salary, conference and vacation time, and fringe benefits are competitive with other fellowship programs at University Hospital.  All offers of employment are contingent upon the successful radiology board certification and Ohio State
