Dr. Wand just joined the Dept. of Radiology in July 2000. He considers himself to be a native New Yorker - the City of course - although he was born in China. He is glad to be back in academic medicine at the University of Cincinnati, where he went to medical school. Prior to this, he was the director of thoracic imaging at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. His other most recent positions were assistant professor of radiology at New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center and State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn. His main academic interest is in diagnosis of chest diseases, which includes performance of lung biopsies.
Lung cancer screening using helical CT (computed tomography) promises to be a challenging project worldwide. The special problem encountered in our region, which includes the Ohio Valley, is the high prevalence of histoplasmosis in the local populace. Dr. Wand is excited about the prospect of starting a screening program at our institution. He thinks that the project will be successful, but that the radiologists and everyone else involved will have to be patient and vigilant in doing more follow-up examinations than at other institutions which do not have patient populations with a such a high incidence of histoplasmosis.
Dr. Wand has been an active member in the Society of Thoracic Radiology. He hopes to be able to continue the long tradition of excellence in chest radiology at our medical center.
Dr. Wand is also the recipient of the 2004 Faculty Medical
Student Teaching Award.
