Professional Summary

  • Dr. Charles Lee, a graduate of Duke University, attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, as well as did his residency and neuroradiology fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. Lee F. Rogers who instilled in him an interest in trauma of the cervical spine. Dr. Lee’s earliest research was in cervical spine trauma for which a plain radiographic sign, the Lee’s X lines, were named for the diagnosis of atlanto-occipital dislocations before CT became the study of choice. His first job was at the University of Kentucky which had the first commercial MR unit in the USA in 1982, a 0.15 resistive magnet by Technicare. While at Kentucky, he developed an expertise in head and neck radiology for which he won a magna cum laude award at the 1990 American Society of Neuroradiology annual meeting for a scientific exhibit on perineural tumor spread of the trigeminal and facial nerve. He also developed an interest in gamma knife radiosurgery and stereotactic localization with Dr. A. B. Young, creating a new method for targeting the subthalamic nucleus for deep brain stimulation treatment of Parkinson’s disease utilizing the supramammillary commissure. He was then recruited to the University of Pittsburgh by a former Kentucky colleague, Dr. Stephen T. DeKosky, who was now chairman of the department of neurology and director of Alzheimer’s research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Lee worked with arterial spin labeling in Alzheimer’s patients, recently publishing a paper on the normal perfusion pattern in normal elderly patients using arterial spin labeling. At Pittsburgh, they were developing ASL as a means of diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease as well as MCI. After Dr. DeKosky departed to become dean of the medical school at the University of Virginia, Dr. Lee returned to the bluegrass state of Kentucky, when he was recruited to the University of Cincinnati, hoping to continue his work in arterial spin labeling on their new 3T MR research instrument as well as develop a head and neck section.
