Medical Physics

About the Program

Medical physics is allied with medical electronics, bioengineering and health physics, and primarily concerned with the application of the concepts and methods of physics to the diagnosis and treatment of human disease.

The UC College of Medicine offers an exciting graduate program in medical physics with a strong clinical emphasis, awarding a master of science degree and preparing students for the ABR exam.

Founded in 1959, UC’s program is well established and ideally suited to those with a solid undergraduate background in physics and desire to serve others as part of a health care team. The two-year program curriculum incorporates three components: didactic course and laboratory work, clinical practicum and applied research project.

The UC program has recently earned accreditation by the Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP), the accrediting body of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

As a medical physicist, you will contribute to the effectiveness of radiological imaging procedures by assuring radiation safety and helping to develop improved imaging techniques (e.g., mammography CT, MR, ultrasound).

You will also contribute to development of therapeutic techniques (e.g., prostate implants, stereotactic radiosurgery), collaborate with radiation oncologists to design treatment plans, monitoring equipment and procedures to ensure that cancer patients receive the prescribed dose of radiation to the correct location.
