PSTP: Research Facilities

Research Facilities

One of the strengths of the University of Cincinnati is the quality and ongoing improvement of our research facilities. A variety of specialized facilities exist to allow the best access to equipment and space for research.

MSB Medical Sciences Building
The Medical Sciences Building (MSB) houses not only the classrooms and laboratory space for the College of Medicine, it is also home to many research laboratories. The MSB connects directly to the UC Hospital complex as well as the Cardiovascular Center. is proceeding on the Center for Academic Research Excellance (CARE) building connected to the Medical Sciences Building and due for completion in 2008.

TCHRF Children's Hospital Research Foundation
The Children's Hospital Research Foundation (CHRF) is part of Children's Hospital Medical Center, located across the street from the MSB. It offers significant laboratory space and research opportunities as well as clinical opportunities provided through Children's Hospital. CHRF has recently tripled in size, and new faculty appointments to fill this space are continuing. Areas of research strength include pulmonology, cardiovascular development, gene regulation, cancer biology, and rheumatology. CHRF is the home base of the Developmental Biology and Immunobiology graduate programs. In 2007 research space will increase by 50%

Vontz Vontz Center for Molecular Studies
The Vontz Center for Molecular Studies opened in 1999 and houses the Cell Biology and Neuroscience Graduate Programs.  Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Ghery, this state-of-the-art facility features open laboratory space to facilitate collaboration among researchers.

CVC Cardiovascular Center
The Cardiovascular Center opened in 1996. It is home to several interdeparmental programs which seek to provide an interactive interface among research, education, and patient care in cardiovascular disease. Major focus areas in basic cardiovascular research include ion pumps and channels, lipoproteins and atherosclerosis, hypertension and vascular smooth muscle, and contractile proteins and heart failure.

Barrett Barrett Cancer Center
The Charles M. Barrett Center for Cancer Prevention, Treatment, and Research combines the institution's clinical strengths in the cancer arena with those in the basic sciences. The center has a free-standing ambulatory care facility and is active in all of the clinical and surgical areas of oncology.

Shriners Shriners Burns Institute
One of only three Shriners Burns Institutes in North America, this hospital offers tremendous support for basic and clinical research. The Shriners organization maintains its own web site that includes more information about the hospitals it operates.

Core Facilities

In addition to the specialized centers for research, UC has also invested in core facilities in strategic areas. The advantage of core facilities is that technology and procedures are made available to more research labs. Core facilities place challenging and often time consuming procedures in the hands of trained experts. This not only increases the success rate of these procedures, it can often provide additional time for researchers to pursue their research. The University of Cincinnati offers the following core facilities to its researchers:
