Summer InternshipClick here to apply for the 2008 Summer Internship ProgramGoals of the Summer Internship ProgramThe internships are designed for talented undergraduate sophomore or junior science majors who are interested in both basic science research and clinical medicine. The purpose of the program is to provide hands-on research experience in a medical school setting, with concomitant opportunity to determine how that research can contribute to the understanding and treatment of disease - e.g. cystic fibrosis, atherosclerosis and heart disease, leprosy, brain tumors, birth defects. Research ExperienceEach intern is matched with an appropriate faculty advisor, based on mutual research interest. The advisor and intern design a specific research project within the context of the research focus of the advisor's laboratory. Selection of the research is biased toward projects which can result in a student-authored publication. Interns interact with physician-scientists who are active in research and patient care, as well as with graduate and medical students and postgraduate fellows. In addition to medically relevant research, the program includes an orientation luncheon, tours of the research and clinical facilities at both the University and Children’s Hospital Medical Center, opportunities to view surgeries, an introduction to human experimentation (Clinical Research Center), and an opportunity for participants to present their research findings at a mini symposium. In addition, the interns have access to the College of Medicine’s experts in career planning and counseling.
Program DatesThe intern program begins in mid-June and lasts for eight weeks. There is some flexibility in the actual start date, if necessary. FundingThe internship provides a stipend for the eight-week period. The stipend is taxable. Although travel reimbursement is not standard, travel requests will be considered and awards will be decided on the basis of need. HousingSubsidized dormitory rooms are available on campus within 0.5 miles of the College of Medicine. A shuttle service runs between the dormitories and the medical center. University food service is optional, and rates vary with the type of food selected. Specific information about University room and board costs is provided upon acceptance to the program. Interns who wish to arrange their own living accommodations may do so. Health InsuranceInterns should arrange for health insurance coverage. Health care is also available on a fee-for-service basis through the University Student Health Service. Applying for AdmissionTo apply, complete the application form and a 1-2 page statement of research interests and career goals. Previous research experience is not a requirement, although the placement process will be improved if a description of any previous experience is included. Two faculty members familiar with the applicant’s academic performance and potential for scientific research should be asked to submit reference letters directly to the program director. Application DeadlinesFor full consideration, all application materials must be received by February 1, 2008.
