"Treating the individual patient can be as rewarding as research or
class-room teaching. Through the MD/PhD, I'll combine all three interests in
my career."
"The continued growth and excellence of the Physician Scientist Training Program is a key
priority of the University of Cincinnati. The PSTP experience is a critical link between the basic
sciences and the clinical setting within the Medical Center and beyond." - Dr. John Hutton, past Dean, UC College of Medicine
"The program and the faculty have provided help and guidance that
has encouraged me to strive toward my own vision of the kind of physicican-scientist
I hope to become."

Clinical Facilities
UC accesses five major teaching hospitals to provide the setting for clinical instruction. Educational programs in the affiliate hospitals differ from one another depending upon the needs of the College and the desires of the affiliate. Physicians at these hospitals supervise students in physical diagnosis, third-year clerkships, acting internships, and electives. The 3500 beds and associated ambulatory clinics of the affiliated hospitals provide the most current health care facilities in the region and are within an easily accessible two-mile radius of the Medical Center.
Other urban health care settings that provide training for students include faculty offices in the Medical Arts Building and the ambulatory satellites, private practitioners' offices, nursing homes, and health maintenance organizations.
Medical School Training in the Preclinical Years
CFMP - I
This course in the first year of medical school provides an introduction to clinical practice by mixing classroom instruction with small group discussion and hands-on practice. Topics include doctor/patient relationships, medical ethics, death and dying, and patient sexuality. There are practicums in patient interviewing and in physical diagnosis.
CFMP - II
This course builds on what was learned in CFMP-I by moving physical diagnosis practice to the bedside. Students work with 8-10 patients during the course of the year, honing their skills in preparation for their third-year clerkships. The course also features instruction on the diagnosis and treatment of disease and is integrated with the pathology, microbiology, and pharmacology courses of second year.
The Third and Fourth Year Medical School Curriculum
PSTP students complete the bulk of the medical school clinical biennieum, performing clerkships in surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, and radiology. In the fourth year, students complete two acting internships in internal medicine in addition to a number of electives.
