Academic training is a cornerstone of any educational program, and the PSTP strives to make its academic pathways a combination of strength and flexibility. While developing the M.D./Ph.D. curriculum, the PSTP has given full attention to the dual nature of the combined degree. The goal of the educational curriculum is to develop outstanding Physician-Scientists, a group of individuals with the clinical expertise required of physicians and the investigative skills needed for scientific research.

Not all students are the same, nor do they envision themselves on the same training pathways that other students have followed. To allow students to plan an educational curriculum that fits best with their individual learning styles and career goals, the PSTP offers flexibility in its academic pathways. To maintain the strength of the educational program, all pathways must include certain key elements. The PSTP also has proven success with several established pathways.
