Welcome to the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation website
We are proud of our past accomplishments and a promising future in The Department of PM&R at The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. As a leading clinical department in a nationally ranked medical center, opportunities abound for clinical care, research, and teaching. Our faculty consists of 12 physicians, a Research Director who works with faculty and residents to develop IRB applications and grants, a clinical psychologist, a vocational counselor, and numerous allied health professionals. Of the physician faculty, the majority are either double board certified and/or fellowship trained. Our department enjoys excellent collaborations with various clinical departments in the University Medical Center. For example, we participate in a weekly neuromuscular conference with two neurology faculty and neurology residents, and, in collaboration with the departments of neurology and neurosurgery, we participate in a mandatory neurosciences curriculum in the senior year of the medical school curriculum. Our anatomy curriculum reinforces functional anatomy and we have involved therapists and neurology residents with this program.
We also boast the finest cadre of clinical sites in, perhaps, the country. This impressive list includes:
- Drake Rehabilitation Center, a 350+-bed free-standing rehabilitation hospital located in Cincinnati. Drake is one of the largest and most comprehensive rehabilitation hospitals in the country.
- Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), consistently ranked as one of the Top 5 children's hospitals in the country, where our pediatric rehabilitation faculty practice, perform research, and teach. The Department of Pediatrics at CCHMC, of which our pediatric rehabilitation physiatrists are members, is consistently ranked in the Top 10.
- The University Hospital, affiliated with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, was named as one of America's Best Hospitals in 2003 by U.S. News and World Report.
- University Pointe, a clinical site operated by UC Physicians on the north side of Cincinnati that opened in 2003.
- The Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), at which several of our faculty practice, perform research and teach.

Our faculty are innovators in their field and are active in cutting edge research that improves function and quality of life of people with disabilities. Examples of studies conducted here include: management of spasticity with Intrathecal Baclofen and Botulinum Toxin; neurolytic blocks for dystonia; intradiscal electrotherapy; studies on forced use therapies, such as modified constraint induced therapy; and studies of family and patient factors and their effects on patient outcomes. Our faculty have published chapters in leading medicine and physical medicine textbooks, edited special issues of leading journals, and regularly publish in rehabilitation medicine journals.
Above all, we focus on enhancing the functional abilities of individuals with various injuries or diseases. Our physiatrists work very closely in concert with primary care physicians as well as a team of rehabilitation specialists including physical, occupational and speech therapy, psychologists, rehabilitation nurses, prosthetists, orthotists, etc. to accomplish individual goals.
Our faculty is very motivated to accomplish the mission of our department. We have two distinct training programs including a categorical physical medicine and rehabilitation training program (with an integrated internship year within the University of Cincinnati Department of Internal Medicine) as well as a double-boarded Pediatric/PM&R Residency Training Program in close collaboration with the highly renowned Children’s Hospital Medical Center Training Program.
The following webpages will explain more about our field, the beautiful City of Cincinnati, and more specifics about our faculty, residents, staff and department. We look forward to meeting you in person.
Sincerely,
