John Alexander Awarded an APS Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship
April 4, 2009—The American Physiological Society (APS) today named UC undergraduate student John Alexander a recipient of this year's APS undergraduate summer research fellowship. John will conduct research in the laboratory of Bryan Mackenzie, PhD, assistant professor of molecular and cellular physiology.
John, a UC biology major in his junior year, was one of 24 awardees who were selected for this year's awards from among a competitive pool of applicants from universities across the US. Fellowship applicants are judged on their undergraduate academic record, research proposal and personal statement, as well as the strengths of the host laboratory.
The APS undergraduate summer research fellowship provides a $4,000 summer stipend to the student, a $300 grant to the faculty advisor, and a travel award of up to $1,300 so that the student can present their research at the APS annual meeting, Experimental Biology 2010, in Anaheim, California.
John will study the structure-function of divalent metal-ion transporter-1 (DMT1) by expressing DMT1 mutants in Xenopus oocytes (frog eggs) and assaying iron transport. DMT1 is the principal or only intestinal uptake mechanism for nonheme iron, and is also essential for hemoglobinization in developing red blood cells.
