MCP Welcomes New Faculty
07/21/2008

July 21, 2008ÑThe department of molecular and cellular physiology welcomes new faculty, Hamid Eghbalnia, PhD and Arthur M Geller, PhD, who move to UC this month, and research assistant professor Roger Worrell, PhD takes up a primary appointment in MCP. Worrell previously held an adjunct position in MCP and a primary appointment in surgery.

Hamid Eghbalnia, PhD moves from the department of biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and joins UC as an assistant professor. Eghbalnia's work comprises computational approaches to solving protein structure and function and modeling biological systems. In the emerging areas of systems biology and metabolomics, Eghbalnia is, for example, using metabolite profile data from NMR and mass spectrometry to uncover the pattern of coherent dynamic biomarker fluxes that provide a unique predictive model for the response to agents that underlie inflammatory responses.

"Hamid offers our department and graduate program a strong presence in computational approaches, wrapping around several questions of physiologic importance," said Chip Montrose, PhD, professor and chair of molecular and cellular physiology. "He is an important part of our drive to build the domain of systems biology on our campus. He is exactly the kind of interactive and keenly interested scientist that will fit in well with us, and will build a great career here."

Formerly a professor of biochemistry at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine, Arthur M Geller, PhD joins MCP as an adjunct professor. Geller's research focuses on the biochemistry of protein and gene methylation, polyamine biosynthesis, and the regulation of methylation in normal and disease states.

Here at UC, Geller will focus on educational initiatives with a goal of helping improve our medical student teaching strategies.

"We are very fortunate to have Art join us," commented Montrose, "as a wonderful benefit of having he and his spouse, Malak Kotb, move to Cincinnati. Dr Kotb takes over as chair of the department of molecular genetics, biochemistry and microbiology. Art brings a wealth of experience in both research and education, and we all look forward to his sage advice on enhancing our teaching strengths."

Roger Worrell, PhD studies intestinal ion absorption and secretion. "Roger has always been a major presence in the department, and it is great to have him join us as a primary appointee," said Montrose. "We will all enjoy helping him pursue his independent research program, and having him more close by as a colleague."
