UC Physiologists Score Hat Trick at APS GI & Liver Section Awards

April 7, 2008—At its annual banquet and business meeting in San Diego, California, the American Physiological Society (APS) Gastrointestinal and Liver Section (GIL Section) tonight recognized the research accomplishments of three UC physiologists. The GIL Section awarded its coveted Takeda Distinguished Research Award to Marshall Montrose, PhD, professor and chair of molecular and cellular physiology. The award is given to investigators who have made outstanding contributions to the fields represented by the GIL Section and gained international recognition for their work. Also at the meeting, Montrose was elected the new section chair.

The section's New Investigator Award was given to Bryan Mackenzie, PhD, assistant professor of molecular and cellular physiology, for his work on membrane transport and nutrient absorption. The award recognizes outstanding investigators in the early stages of their career. Awardees, who are not above the rank of assistant professor, are considered to have made meritorious contributions to the fields represented by the GIL Section and are judged by their publications and evidence for independence and promise (grant funding, peer review activities, etc).

Ali Shawki, an undergraduate and biology major working in the Mackenzie Lab, won the Takeda Research Recognition Award for an Undergraduate Student, for his communication entitled "Molecular impact of divalent metal-ion transporter (DMT1) mutations (V114del and G212V) found in a compound heterozygote with microcytic anemia and hepatic iron overload" by Ali Shawki, Anthony C Illing, and Bryan Mackenzie [view abstract], which he presented at the Experimental Biology meeting. Shawki also was selected as a finalist for the APS David S Bruce Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research.
