Primary Appointment: Department of Neurology
My lab studies the mechanisms of cerebral vascular and cardiovascular diseases at the chemical/biochemical and cellular level and correlates these observations to the clinical condition. Currently the main lab focus is on the causes of cerebral vasospasm, typically that following subarachnoid hemorrhage, but also any complications following stroke or hemorrhaging into and around the brain. We have identified the structure of an abnormal fragment of bilirubin that may contribute to the vascular pathology associated with cerebral vasospasm. The research that we do is also applied to related diseases with vascular dysfunction; including pre-eclampsia, stroke, hypertension and peripheral vascular disease. As such, we study vascular metabolism, function and proliferation to characterize the pathologies and assess putative therapies.
