MAKE DISCOVERIES
The University of Cincinnati is noted for the first antihistamine drug discovery, for the Sabin polio vaccine and for the discovery of the mechanism of action of dantrolene, which has largely ameliorated mortality due to malignant hyperthermia in the operating room. Other notable research from the University includes work on the biological mechanism of action of important cardiovascular drugs such as digitalis glycosides and calcium channel antagonists. Recent advances on cell signaling cytokines and genetic variance in drug responsiveness among asthma sufferers are further examples of the directions research within our program might lead you.

PHARMACOLOGY is :
The science of drug actions on biological systems and of the effects of biological systems on drug actions.
The science that studies the physical and chemical properties and mechanism of action of the biochemical substances (pharmacological agents) that regulate life processes.
The pinnacle of the biomedical sciences; working on solutions for the human disease challenges of today.
The science that forms the bridge between foundation biomedical and life sciences and human clinical medical sciences.
Pharmacological agents may be drugs or natural regulatory substances including peptides, chemicals and gene products.
PHARMACOLOGY IS NOT:
...Pharmacy, which is the profession responsible for preparing, dispensing and determining the appropriate use of medications.
...though often confused with Pharmacy, Pharmacology is a separate discipline in the life sciences.

If you are considering a career in the field of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics, our Molecular, Cellular and Biochemical Pharmacology Graduate Program offers in depth course material. Pharmacology is defined as the discipline which deals with all aspects of interaction of endogenous or exogenous natural or synthetic compounds with the body systems. It is a dynamic subject which encompasses a number of basic science areas such as whole body, organ and cell physiology, cell biophysics, biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology.
