Residency Program

Residency Curriculum

THE RESIDENCY SCHEDULE

Since the start of the 1991-92 academic year, major revisions of the residency program have allowed a schedule which provides excellent patient coverage and yet acknowledges the need for appropriate rest and recuperation by the residents. All weekday call has been eliminated at University Hospital, with coverage provided by two labor and delivery teams working 12-14 hour shifts. These teams have some portion of every weekend off and time every day to sleep. Weekend call is then provided by off-service residents who take no night call during the week. These offservice residents rotate through a weekend schedule requiring one 12-hour shift, one 24-hour shift, and then one to two weekends entirely free. This schedule has been enthusiastically received by all of the residents who have experienced it. A similar call schedule is planned for the residents on-call at The Christ Hopsital in July 2003. Currently call at The Christ is Hopsital has a night float system with the residents taking weekend call every other weekend.

Rotations are split into 7- or 8-week blocks and are listed below by resident year.
