Education

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology plays an active role in the educational activities of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Divisional faculty supervise third-year medical students, lecture in the third year clerkship, conduct formal discussions in wards and clinics with medical students and conduct oral and written examinations for students.

Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology rotate through the Gynecologic Oncology service so that each resident at completion of his or her training is fully knowledgeable in the work-up and management of patients with pre-invasive and malignant gynecologic disease. Areas also include complicated gynecologic disease, management of the critically ill patient, chemotherapy administration, and psychosocial needs of the terminally ill patient and her family.

The teaching of gynecologic oncology occurs through a variety of activities. These activities include:

  • Discussions and daily bedside rounds
  • Pre- and post-operative care and management
  • Outpatient (i.e., colposcopy, laser, LEEP) and inpatient (surgical anatomy, retroperitoneal exploration, radical surgery) surgical procedures.
  • Monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference
  • Monthly Gyn Oncology case presentation at Resident and Faculty Conference
  • Weekly Multidisciplinary Gyn Oncology/Radiation Oncology conference

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology has been a full member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) since 1985. The GOG is a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting excellence in the quality and integrity of clinical and basic scientific research in the field of Gynecologic malignancies. The Group is committed to maintaining the highest standards in clinical trials development, execution, analysis and distribution of results. Continuous evaluation of our processes is utilized in order to constantly improve the quality of patient care. To promote this mission, the GOG receives support from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes for Health (NIH). At the University of Cincinnati we have individual clinical trials active for patients with a variety of gynecologic malignancies, including cancers that arise from the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva.
