Patient Care

Inpatient clinical services are provided at both The University Hospital and The Christ Hospital, providing primary and consultative obstetric care as well as supervising the clinical activities of the resident physicians at The University Hospital. Special needs patients are provided sophisticated care in this tertiary setting including:

  • Hypertensive Complications of Pregnancy
  • Premature Labor
  • Preterm Premature Rupture of the Membranes
  • Fetal Intrauterine Growth Restriction
  • Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus
  • Fetus with Congenital Anomalies
  • Medical Complications of Pregnancy
  • Bleeding Disorders in Pregnancy
  • Maternal Transport

Outpatient clinical services are provided at The University Hospital, The Christ Hospital, St. Luke Hospitals East and West, and Mercy-Franciscan Hospital. These services include:

  • Primary High Risk Obstetric Care
  • Co-management of Complicated Obstetric Patients
  • Consultations
    • High Risk on-going pregnancies
    • Pre-Pregnancy consultations
  • Obstetric Ultrasound
    • Routine (Level I) and Targeted (Level II) obstetric scans
    • Fetal Echocardiography
    • Amniocentesis
    • Chorion villus sampling
    • Fetal Intrauterine Transfusion

Education

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine provides teaching to medical students during the third-year clerkship and several specialized 4th-year electives. Division members participate in the core lecture series of the primary third-year medical student Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship. They also participate as lecturers in the Department's annual postgraduate course. The Division has maintained a Board-approved 3-year fellowship program in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility for two decades

Research

The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine has major funded research efforts regarding the antiphospholipid syndrome, uterine and ovarian blood flow regulation, and prostaglandin regulation of labor. Numerous basic and clinical research projects are fertile ground for clinical and basic scientists in training. Clinical research includes ongoing studies regarding preterm premature rupture of the membranes, fetal pulmonary maturity, preeclampsia, diabetes, preterm labor and magnesium sulfate to decrease cerebral palsy risk.
