In Year 3, the Nutrition in Medicine Modules are assigned during
the students’ clerkships. These interactive educational modules, developed
by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, contain information related
to the science of nutrition, as well as practical tips for counseling patients
about nutritional needs. Case studies and interactive exercises require students
to critically analyze and apply nutrition information to “real life”
scenarios in which they must make decisions regarding the diagnosis, prevention,
and treatment of disease.
Specific modules are assigned in clerkships as follows:
- Maternal & infant nutrition: Ob/Gyn
- Nutrition & growth: Pediatrics
- Diet, obesity, & cardiovascular disease: Family Medicine
- Diabetes & weight management: Internal Medicine
- Nutrition & metabolic stress: Surgery
In Year 4, a Clinical Nutrition Elective is offered in the Spring. This two-week elective introduces students to the application of nutrition principles for the prevention and treatment of disease. The course
includes presentations by experts in the field, case studies, clinical placements with registered dietitians, and assignments related to nutrition counseling and recipe modification.
