In Year 1, Nutrition in Health is one of the components of the course Clinical
Foundations in Medical Practice 1 (CFMP 1). Six lectures are included in this
component, addressing the topics of nutrition assessment, prenatal
nutrition, nutrition during infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and geriatric
nutrition. Each student will complete a dietary assessment by analyzing their
own food record using the USDA MyPyramid.
Each student is also given the opportunity for assessment of their health status
through a (1) DEXA scan to determine bone density and body composition and (2)
a plasma lipid profile.
In CFMP 1, nutrition-related questions are included in the medical interview.
Nutrition topics are also included in other course lectures and group discussions,
such as in Biochemistry.
In Year 2, Nutrition in Disease is one of the components of the course Clinical
Foundations in Medical Practice 2 (CFMP 2). Six lectures address nutrition
interventions for obesity, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disease,
diabetes, renal disease, and enteral & parenteral nutrition support. Each
student will apply the principles of medical nutrition therapy by answering
case-related questions pertaining to the disorders discussed in class.
In CFMP 2, nutrition information may also be applied in the clinical assessment activities.
