Posttraumatic ICA Dissection

Findings:
CCA arteriogram shows a smoothly tapered stenosis of the internal carotid artery distal to its origin.

Differential Diagnosis:
dissection, atherosclerosis, less likely extrinsic compression.

Discussion:
Extracranial dissection may be the result of trauma or neck manipulation. Underlying vessel abnormalities such as FMD, syphilis, Marfan's and others may predispose to dissection. For further discussion, please refer to unknown #42.
