Opening Speaker
6:30 - 7:30 pm
Laura Pulfer
Having the Last Laugh
Be prepared to be entertained! Be prepared
to be challenged! Laura Pulfer is a Cincinnati Enquirer columnist
and commentator for National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, whose perceptive
observations on local politics, urban blight, social crises, and human
nature make you laugh, make you mad, or make you cry. With an earthy
wit and charm, her commentaries capture the absurdities that every-day
urban life presents to the thoughtful citizen. She’s
no stranger to libraries or librarians and has been an enthusiastic supporter
of both. Neither is Laura a stranger to hospitals, doctors,
or HMOs due to her recent bout with breast cancer, which has propelled
her into being an outspoken advocate of mammogram screening even when the
“bean counters” would say otherwise.

Dr. Charles “Chuck” Friedman
Informatics, IAMS and the Library: Bringing
It All Together
Several trends seem to be self-evident. Health
care is increasingly becoming an information science. Also, the knowledge
generated, held, and transferred by academic health science centers is
increasingly becoming the commodity that makes these centers unique and
in a real sense justifies their continued existence. This presentation
will create a vision of the future academic health center that has successfully
embraced these trends. Central to this vision is a partnership between
the health sciences library and a strong information technology infrastructure,
compliant with the philosophy and methods of the NLM's IAIMS program.
