CE 1: Complementary & Alternative Medicine
[CAM]: Information Resources for Choices in Healing

This course provides an overview of complementary
and alternative medicine (CAM) in health care today. Mr. Wessel will
discuss the most commonly used CAM systems, their nomenclature, their impact
on the treatment of chronic diseases and the future impact these therapies
will have on the provision of reference services in academic and clinical
settings. The focus of the course will be on the use of Internet resources
and guidelines for the provision of reference to individuals seeking CAM
therapies.
CE 2: Evidence Based Medicine for Librarians

In this course participants will learn the principles
of evidence-based medicine. In this approach to clinical practice,
clinicians base their decisions and actions on appropriate evidence from
health care research literature in addition to medical expertise and patient
circumstances. Described are the research approaches to therapy, diagnosis,
etiology, and prognosis of medical conditions. This research is used
for original studies, systematic review articles and clinical practice
guidelines. MEDLINE search approaches for retrieving articles are
explored.
CE 3: Making PubMed Work for You

This class is intended to sharpen basic searching
techniques and the ability to develop search strategies. Various methods
for searching the PubMed system will be explored. Topics covered
include using MeSH and search qualifiers, limiting search results, refining
your search and SDI searching. This course will provide an in depth view
of the system and demonstrate utilizing the features of PubMed to search
effectively. This course provides the attendees with hands-on opportunities
to practice their search techniques.

CE 4: Consumer Health Information

A workshop for librarians providing health information
to the public. This hands-on course for librarians will cover the definition,
trends, issues, sources and providers of consumer health information.
Interview skills and techniques will be simulated. Issues on providing
information versus offering opinion, the use of disclaimers attached to
information and available on library or health information web sites will
be discussed. Aspects of setting up and managing a consumer health
library will be also be considered and development tools offered.
CE 5: The Amazing Document Delivery Maze

The course will assist administrators and interlibrary
loan coordinators with understanding the components of electronic document
delivery systems and features. Discover how to provide access to
and delivery of materials not owned locally by obtaining documents from
commercial suppliers or from other libraries using electronic delivery
technologies. The course gives a general overview of commercial document
delivery suppliers and provides specific guidance on how to select and
evaluate document suppliers. Options for electronic delivery and
evaluation of existing and emerging tools will be explored.
