Course Overview

The Clinical Foundations of Medical Practice-2 course which takes place over the course of one year is to prepare students for clerkship responsibilities by performing both an organ-system-specific physical examination and routine technical procedures. Critical reasoning skills will be demonstrated by students with the ability to define, through patient encounters, clinical problems, formulate a differential diagnosis, complete a course of management for patients, select appropriate tests for specific diseases and integrate clinical/basic science knowledge with patient information. In addition, students will be able to accurately complete a thorough medical history through both oral and written communication.

Clinical Foundations of Medical Practice-2 is a course which presents the following:
Cardiology, Dermatology, Digestive Diseases, Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Pulmonary Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Urology, Physical Diagnosis, Infectious Diseases, and Transfusion Medicine.

In addition to the core curriculum, by way of small groups, supervised patient workups and rotations are presentations in the Medical Interview, (advanced interviewing skills which elicit more complex clinical data from patients), Health Care Ethics (which focuses on the ability to recognize and appropriately analyze ethical dilemmas), Death, Dying, Grieving and Loss (which enables students to acquire the important qualities and skills to help patients deal with end-of-life issues and the advance planning for care, i.e. hospice and palliative care), Sexual Health (which provides information which will enhance the ability of the future physician to better care of patients in the area of sexual health including issues of diversity of attitudes and behaviors) and Nutrition (which focuses with prevention and treatment of disease through nutrition).
