The Office of Medical Education coordinates the process through which the performance of individual students in meeting the objectives of the curriculum is measured. The Academic Performance Standards: Guidelines for Promotion Boards * delineates the academic standards established by the faculty. The College of Medicine fully recognizes that professionalism is a hallmark of a physician and has incorporated appropriate expectations into the performance standards. An Assistant Dean for Medical Education serves as Executive Secretary of the Promotion Boards. For further information, please contact Mary Heider, PhD.

Formative evaluation procedures allow faculty to assess and monitor students’ degree of progress within each of their courses and clerkships by answering the question “How is the student doing?” (versus the summative evaluation question of “How did the student do?). By asking this question were are able to inform the student as to his/her progress so that appropriate adjustments may be made as necessary. At UCCOM, we see the formative evaluation process as being a shared responsibility of the course or clerkship director, the faculty members, the administration, and the students. For more detailed information see Formative Evaluation Procedures in Medical Education * or contact Linda M. Goldenhar, PhD.
