How to Apply

If you are interested in the program and wish to apply for a summer fellowship, you should:

  • Search the list of faculty members who are willing to serve as mentors and identify those whose research interests you.  Because this a grant funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) preference will be given to mentors funded by these disciplines.  You may also contact faculty whose names do not appear on the list.
  • Meet with the faculty members of interest and discuss possible projects that could be completed within the 8 ½-week program.  (It is not the intent of the program to support clinical service or chart review studies.)  Choose your final mentor and project.
  • With the assistance of your faculty mentor, develop an hypothesis-driven research proposal and complete the application form.  Please note there is information required from both student and mentor but the proposal should be written by the student.  The examples of past successful applications may be helpful for understanding the intended format and desired content.
  • Submit the completed application to Lona Pearson (CCHMC, ML-5006) for paper copies, lona.pearson@cchmc.org for electronic submission.
  • The deadline for receipt of the applications is March 7, 2008. The Student Research Committee will convene at the end of March to select the summer fellows.  You will be notified of the status of your application on April 7, 2008.
In order to allow sufficient time for discussion of projects and preparation of a carefully considered application, you are strongly encouraged to contact faculty members as early in the year as possible (December or January).  If you have any difficulties selecting or contacting a mentor or if you have any questions, contact the director at 636-8046 (FAX 636-9677).

The Application is a document in Microsoft Word Form and Adobe Acrobat formats.  For the Word format, we recommend that you download the application as well as the instructions.  After completing the application, you can submit it as an email attachment or as a hard copy, which you then fax to the number above. For the Acrobat format, no instructions are provided. Just print the application, and once you have completed it, fax it to 636-9677.
