Medical Student Education Overview

The medical student experience in internal medicine involves a third-year clerkship and a number of fourth-year electives.

The third-year clerkship is an eight-week rotation consisting of four weeks on an inpatient ward service and four weeks in ambulatory care. The educational emphasis is on history and physical examination skills and problem definition.

To complement their student clinic experience, students work with a preceptor based in the community and in an internal medicine subspecialty clinic.

The overall goal is to help medical students make the transition from a basic science student to a member of the health care team.
