The University of Cincinnati Department of Internal Medicine accepts applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We will begin reviewing applications in September 2023.
When should I apply?
Applications are accepted through ERAS for all residency tracks as early as September 2023. We accept applications to the Categorical, Physician Scientist and Preliminary Residency tracks through January 2024.We appreciate the impact of COVID-19 on medical school schedules. Our aim is to be flexible with the application process. We have no letter of recommendation quantity requirement. Rather, we strongly encourage letters of support from individuals who have worked with you in a clinical, mentoring, leadership, or scholarly capacity to facilitate commentary on your clinical acumen, work ethic, dedication, and interpersonal communication skills. For categorical applicants, we encourage students to obtain at least two letters from an individual in the department of internal medicine (e.g. department chair, clerkship director, faculty attending, mentor, etc.). The other letter(s) can be assigned at the applicant's discretion.
Due to the adjusted ERAS timeline, we anticipate sending invitations in early to mid October. Please note that we continue to review applications and send invitations throughout the interview season.
We have no minimum requirement for USMLE/COMLEX scores and look at an applicant's entire application package before making our interview invitations. We will not require Step II-CK/COMLEX Level II-CE scores for an invitation to interview; however, we will require that applicants share their scores with us by the end of January 2024.
We utilize the thalamus comprehensive scheduling platform to schedule our interviews. This platform provides applicants with easy, secure, and immediate interview scheduling capabilities.
Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic we will be conducting all interviews virtually again in 2022-2023. We plan on a synchronous interview day with an expected duration of 4-6 hours. We also want you to have an opportunity to meet our residents with a virtual social event the evening before your interview. An interview experience with our program will look like this:
The only difference is that our weekday interview offers an exposure to a typical academic noon conference with our residents.
If you have any questions after your interview day, you may contact us and we will answer them. We may send a single email at the end of the interview season to update you on the changes and updates (e.g. fellowship match outcomes) in our program.
We are able to interview only the most exceptional candidates from non-U.S. medical schools due to the extremely competitive nature of our training programs. We cannot originate an H-1B visa, but can accept a J1.
In considering medical graduates for interview, our typical international resident candidate will have recent clinical experience in the United States with excellent letters of reference.
Most candidates selected for interview will have graduated from medical school within the past two or three years.
International medical graduates are not required to have an ECFMG certificate or USMLE Step 2 results in order to apply and interview with our program; however, the ECFMG certification process must be complete and USMLE 2 CK passed to be eligible for our match list.
