Formal Training in Educational Theory and Scholarship

The Medical Education Fellowship will train physicians to be master internal medicine educators through a curriculum that provides a balanced educational experience in the science of education, leadership in medical education, and teaching in an environment that promotes innovation, scholarship, and dissemination.

Master’s Degree in Education (MEd)

The online Master’s Degree in Education (MEd) for Health Care Professionals is the formal part of the fellowship’s curriculum. This includes courses focusing on adult learning, curriculum and instruction, and educational measurement and research. An educational research project and manuscript completes the degree and will also service as one’s capstone fellowship project.

Professional and Leadership Development

The Professional and Leadership Development component will be done in conjunction with scholars in a sister Medical Education Fellowship housed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The monthly Professional and Leadership Development Series (PLDS) will span both years of the program. The seminars in the PLDS, facilitated by various faculty experts from around the academic health center, will focus on competencies and skills necessary for today’s clinician educator, scholar, and leader. Supervised Teaching

Supervised Teaching will occur in our outpatient internal medicine clinics and/or inpatient medical services, depending upon a faculty or fellow’s area of clinical interest. Teaching in these areas will include supervised precepting/teaching utilizing an observed structured teaching evaluation (OSTE), as well as an opportunity to be involved in curriculum development for and feedback to the residents and students they supervise. In addition to clinical teaching, scholars will have opportunities for presenting in more structured arenas, such as resident conferences, the Department's Master Teacher Program, and at regional and national conferences related to education.

Clinical Experience

Patient care activities are included as an integral part of the overall fellowship program to help scholars build their clinical experience in internal medicine. Scholars will spend 50% of their time retaining clinical skills in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
