Academic Overview

The Division of Hematology Oncology is actively involved in the education and training of medical students, graduate students, residents, and clinical and research fellows.  The division offers to medical students three intensive fourth-year elective courses, allowing students to participate in all aspects of academic Hematology and Oncology.  A teaching curriculum is offered to graduate students.  Residents and fellows receive hands-on training, rotating through inpatient wards and ambulatory clinics.  This experience is complemented by several electives and research opportunities on and off campus.

The Hematology Oncology Fellowship Program at UC provides fellows with clinical expertise as well as hands-on clinical and translational research, supplemented with structured didactic learning.  We have a wide range of educational offerings such as protected time for research in the Experimental Therapeutics Program and/or our research laboratories.  In addition, our research and clinical fellows can access ample additional training opportunities in immunology, laboratory medicine, transfusion medicine, cell therapy and cancer biology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, the Hoxworth Blood Center or the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.  We also offer a highly specialized fellowship in Experimental Therapeutics, and participate in the Department of Internal Medicine Physician Scientist Training Program, IMSTAR, and several graduate programs of the University Of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

These resources provide our trainees with the tools needed to develop the skills needed to pursue a career in academia, pharma/biotech or clinical practice, making an significant impact on the treatment of patients with cancer.
