The UC Heart & Vascular Center's Division of Cardiac Surgery is world renowned for its development and innovation of minimally invasive techniques to treat patients with cardiac disease, and houses the only adult cardiac transplant program in the region. Sixteen cardiac transplants were performed in 2003, and 20 - 30 transplants per year are expected in the coming years.
We offer patients a multi disciplinary approach to cardiac disease. Our team performs a variety of operative procedures in patients including state-of-the-art treatments such as minimally invasive MAZE procedure for atrial fibrillation, robotic assisted cardiac surgery, left ventricle assist device (LVAD) insertion, and heart transplantation for severe heart failure, as well as arterial myocardial revascularization and complex mitral valve repair. The Division of Cardiac Surgery provides the only chronic long-term LVAD support for heart disease, and serves as a referral center for patients requiring specialized cardiac care.
